Seed Bed Preparation

Seed Bed Preparation

When you choose to seed instead of turf it is key to choose the right and best seed mixture for the jobs at hand , for instance if you have dogs or kids would be advisable to perhaps pick a more hardy and durable seed mixture. This will help assist with future operations as will be able to withstand more wear and tear as well as other grass species. Below we will explain what operations we carry out to complete any job and also show a example where we produced a surface for kids to play football on and this shows the  importance of picking the right seed mixture right from the start.

Preparation is key

To the right way was rough ground where we had to produce a small football pitch and play area for two young boys , so key at first we had a consultation with the owners and picked a football pitch mixture which is full of Dwarf Perennial Ryegrass species a very hardy grass more durable and adaptable to wear and tear.

The next step was to measure up the entire area and decide how much top soil , what machinery , labour and the aftercare needed to make this a fully beautiful and working playing surface.

On this job including going around the side of the house and the back we needed 35 tonnes so we used a mini digger , compact tractor with three implements ( Rotavator , Stone burier and Leveller ) ,and a lot of old fashion wheel barrowing especially around the back. Also as well as levelling with the tractor implement and digger we did finish beautifully with the hand rakes especially when spreading the seed to make sure we create a safe , level beautiful surface to be enjoyed by the parents and of course the kids.

Below is the way we went round producing this surface and how we would go round other surfaces.

Operations Carried Out

  • Spray weeds couple of weeks ahead of works,
  • Rotavate with a heavier rotavator ,
  • rake and remove larger rubble
  • Rotavate again with heavier rotavator ,
  • re rake and remove remaining larger rubble
  • Rotavate and stone bury with stone burier twice
  • Add top spoil whilst consolidating soil down
  • Rake or level as you go
  • Final removal of any stones that might of come to the surface
  • Rake
  • Spread seed at the desired rate
  • Nice gentle finishing rake if needed
  • Spray or spread pre germination fertiliser application

Start watering very very important and then we will implement after care maintenance plan

Below is typical after care plan provided with all works and estimated costs of area's but quotes always done on inspection and consultation.

Typical After Care Plan and Costings

Full quote and more accurate report will be provided after full consultation and site inspection

Typical After Care Plan

If works completed in spring : -

  • Nano Vigour liquid feed ( Add nutrients )
  • Nano Charge liquid feed ( Encourage growth )
  • Nano Vigour liquid feed ( Add nutrients )
  • Nano Charge liquid feed ( Encourage growth )
  • Spike ( Aeration to improve water / air filtration )
  • Overseed ( Thicken sward )
  • Nano Charge ( Help seed germinate )
  • Selective herbicide ( Attack weeds )
  • Winter Application + Iron ( protection over the winter )

Estimated Costs of an Area around 660 sq metres

Genrally the price depends on materials, machinery , labour and clearance varying from project to project so will estimate on a average job listed below : -

  • 30 Tonnes of top soil
  • 2 bags of football grass seed mixture
  • Tractor 3 implements
  • Mini digger
  • Mechanical Wheel Barrows
  • 3 to 4 people over 4 to 5 days

Estimated price would be £4.75 per sq metre = £3135

Prices will vary per job and totally depends on whats needed
